German term meaning “healing moor” — peat that has been officially recognized as meeting therapeutic quality standards. In Germany and Austria, “Heilmoor” is a regulated designation indicating the peat has been tested and approved for medical use.
Quality Requirements
To be designated Heilmoor/Heiltorf, peat must meet specific criteria including minimum humification degree (H6+), humic acid content (>20% DW), microbiological safety, and absence of harmful contaminants. The designation is tied to specific peat deposits that have been geologically surveyed and chemically characterized.
Relationship to “Moor”
“Moor” in German refers to a bog or peatland. “Heilmoor” specifically means a moor whose peat has therapeutic value. Not all moor peat qualifies as Heilmoor.
