Moor
Materials
Also: Moor, bog, peatland, fen, mire
German and English term for a peat-forming wetland. In cosmetic and balneological context, “moor” typically refers to the peat deposit itself or products derived from it (moor mud, moor bath, moor cream).
Types
- Raised bog (Hochmoor) — Rain-fed, acidic, dominated by sphagnum. Source of the highest quality cosmetic peat.
- Fen (Niedermoor) — Groundwater-fed, less acidic, higher mineral content. Traditional source for Central European Moortherapie.
- Transitional moor (Übergangsmoor) — Between raised bog and fen characteristics.
In Product Names
“Moor” appears in many product names (Moor Spa, Moor Cream, Moorbad) as a marketing signal for peat-based products. The German “Moor” carries more therapeutic connotation than the English “peat.”
