Spa Medicine (Kurortmedizin)
Spa & Balneology Terms
Also: spa medicine, Kurortmedizin, Kurmedizin, spa therapy, Kur
The broader medical discipline of using natural healing factors — mineral waters, muds, peat, climate, and physical therapies — for treatment and rehabilitation at designated spa towns (Kurorte). Encompasses balneotherapy, peloidotherapy, climatotherapy, and hydrotherapy.
The Kur System
In German-speaking countries, a “Kur” is a prescribed therapeutic stay at a spa town, typically lasting 3-4 weeks. It includes daily treatments, medical supervision, rest, and lifestyle modification. Kur costs are partially or fully covered by statutory health insurance for approved indications. This system is the institutional framework that has sustained European peat therapy for over 200 years.
