Cosmetic Peat

Materials
Also: cosmetic peat, cosmetic-grade peat, balneological peat, therapeutic peat, beauty peat, skincare peat, raviturvas

Peat that has been tested, processed, and approved for use in cosmetic and skincare products. Distinguished from horticultural peat (garden use) and energy peat (fuel) by its quality standards, processing, and intended application.

Quality Standards

Cosmetic peat must meet specific criteria:

  • Humification degree H6+ (ideally H8) on the von Post scale
  • Humic acid content >20% dry weight
  • Free of harmful bacteria and heavy metals
  • Sourced from ecologically clean, undrained peatlands
  • Processed to cosmetically acceptable texture and consistency

Difference from Garden Peat

Garden peat is lightly decomposed surface material (H2-H4) with low bioactive content. Cosmetic peat is deeply humified (H6-H8+), sourced from specific deep layers, and rich in humic substances. The difference is like comparing green wood to charcoal — same source, entirely different properties.
