About

The Cosmetic Peat Institute is an independent educational resource focused on the science behind peat-based cosmetics and their applications in skin and scalp care.

Our purpose

Balneological peat — the decomposed, microbe-rich peat used in therapeutic treatments — has a centuries-long history in European spa medicine. Despite this, it is rarely covered in English-language cosmetic science literature. Most published research exists in German, Czech, Estonian, and Russian — languages inaccessible to the global cosmetics community.

This site bridges that gap. We compile, translate, and explain:

  • The biochemistry of humic and fulvic acids derived from peat
  • Peer-reviewed research on peat’s dermatological and cosmetic effects
  • Industry standards and quality criteria for cosmetic-grade peat
  • Practical applications: scalp care, balneotherapy, face treatments, body wraps
  • Sustainable sourcing and environmental considerations

Editorial standards

We distinguish carefully between:

  • Established science — findings replicated in peer-reviewed research
  • Traditional use — historical and ethnobotanical evidence
  • Emerging evidence — preliminary research requiring further study
  • Manufacturer claims — commercial assertions not yet independently verified

Health and cosmetic claims in our content are labelled accordingly.

Background

The Institute is developed in connection with Sphagnum Botanicals, an Estonian company producing peat-based hair and skin care products, and a network of researchers and practitioners working with peat in the Nordic-Baltic region.

Estonia has particularly rich traditions in peat research and peat cosmetics — the country’s extensive Sphagnum bogs produce some of Europe’s highest-quality balneological peat, and Estonian spa medicine has employed peat treatments for well over a century.
